Unfortunately, the transfer isn’t always easy as the connecting buses don’t always add up. The timetables don’t always work well together so you might end up having to spend the night in town, before continuing on your way to Panama City. It can be fairly lengthy, and sometimes a little frustrating, particularly if the first leg of the journey takes longer than expected as you may get stuck in Sona or Santiago unplanned.

It is, however, a cheap option, costing only around $17 USD per person for the 6-8 hour journey. Quite a bargain, but we think you get what you pay for!

If you choose Sona, there are five daily buses, each one taking around 4 hours in duration. The earliest bus is at 5:50 AM and the last is at 5:45 PM. There are five daily buses from Sona to Santa Catalina, and the duration of the journey is approximately 2 hours. 

If you choose Santiago, there are more options as any service going to David will stop there, so the buses are frequent throughout the day. The journey takes around 3.5 hours, and the onward journey to Santa Catalina takes around 2.5 hours, with the last departure from Santiago at 6 PM.

Whichever option you choose, be sure to check the coordinating bus timetables to ensure you can make a connection. In many cases you may find that you have to stay overnight before continuing the journey to Santa Cataline, as the timetables don’t always add up.
